Function and technical context

The aluminum anode acts as a sacrificial element in the cooling circuit of the marine engine, protecting itself through controlled oxidation against galvanic corrosion caused by contact of the metal with salt water. It is strategically installed in the engine block water jackets, where it undergoes accelerated and predictable corrosion that prevents critical cast iron or steel components from structural deterioration. Its progressive degradation is essential to maintain the integrity of internal passages, joints and sealing surfaces that, if corroded, would cause coolant losses, propeller overheating and serious mechanical failures in navigation.

When to replace this part?

The aluminum anode requires inspection and replacement at least once per boating season, especially after intensive use in salt water or waters with high conductivity. Symptoms of burnout include almost complete loss of visible material, color change to powdery white, or active corrosion deposits on the engine walls. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely consumed prevents galvanic corrosion from directly attacking the cylinders, cylinder heads and water passages, avoiding costly and unforeseen repairs out of port.
