Function and technical context

This sacrificial anode for OMC engines protects the submerged metal parts of the propulsion unit against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that progressively destroys aluminum and steel alloys in contact with saltwater or brackish water. It acts as an active electrode within the cathodic protection system of the outboard motor, sacrificing itself in a controlled manner to preserve higher-cost structural components such as the motor foot housing, propeller shaft and lower gearcase. Without effective cathodic protection, corrosion advances silently and can compromise the mechanical integrity of the propulsion assembly in just a few boating seasons. Replaces manufacturer reference 385818 and is also compatible with OMC reference 982438, guaranteeing direct fit without modifications.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that an anode must be replaced is the loss of between 30 and 50% of its mass: when it shows an irregular surface, greatly reduced size or with deep craters, it has ceased to provide effective protection and must be changed immediately. As a general preventive maintenance rule, it is recommended to inspect anodes at least once per season and replace them at the start of each boating campaign if they show visible wear, or at most every two seasons even if they appear to be in good condition. Replacing the anode at the workshop or in port, before launching, is the simplest and most economical way to avoid corrosion damage that can require costly repairs or even replacement of motor structural components.
