Function and Technical Context

The sacrificial anode protects the submerged metal parts of the outboard motor from galvanic corrosion, acting as a sacrificial electrode that oxidizes in place of the aluminum or steel of the powerhead. This component works directly within the anti-corrosion protection system of the lower unit and engine block, being especially critical in saltwater or brackish environments where electrochemical activity is more aggressive. Compatible with Johnson and Evinrude engines of 60, 70, 90, 115 and 140 HP, as well as certain Suzuki references, it replaces OMC part numbers 5032542 and 5032929 (trim/tab part). If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, the structural parts of the motor are exposed to galvanic corrosion, which can result in irreversible damage to the lower unit, shaft or gearcase.

When to Replace This Part?

The clearest symptom that the anode needs replacement is a visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, as below that threshold its protection capacity drops drastically. It is recommended to inspect and replace anodes at least once per boating season, or more frequently if the vessel operates regularly in high-salinity waters or near port facilities with stray currents. Changing the anode preventatively at the beginning of each season is the most cost-effective maintenance measure to avoid major repairs to the motor or lower unit.
