Function and technical context

This aluminum anode acts as a sacrificial electrode in the outboard motor's cathodic protection system, interposing a more electrochemically active metal so that it corrodes instead of the structural metal components of the block, housing or shaft. It works at the interface between the engine and sea or brackish water, where galvanic corrosion is one of the main causes of premature deterioration in nautical engines. Its controlled degradation preserves much higher cost parts such as the engine foot, the tail shaft or the lower block. Aluminum as a material is especially suitable for use in brackish or open sea waters, offering more active protection than zinc in these environments. Without it, exposed components can suffer pitting, thinning and structural failure in a matter of a season.

When to replace this part?

The anode must be inspected at least once a season and replaced when it has lost approximately half of its mass or presents an irregular surface with obvious loss of material: at that point it no longer guarantees sufficient protection. A clear sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the appearance of corrosion or pitting on the adjacent metal surfaces of the engine, indicating that the sacrifice has been completed and the block has begun to be affected. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season, or after 200-300 hours of navigation in corrosive waters, avoids significant damage to high-cost components that can leave the boat out of service.
