Description

Function and Technical Context

The propulsive element of any outboard motor converts engine torque into thrust on the water, and its geometry directly determines the vessel's dynamic performance characteristics. This three-blade aluminum propeller, with a diameter of 11.60 inches and a pitch of 14, has been designed for four-stroke engines of 40 and 50 HP, offering a precise balance between planing traction and acceleration response. The right-hand rotation—clockwise when viewed from the stern—makes it suitable for standard single-engine installations, as incorrect rotation direction or inadequate pitch forces the engine to operate outside its optimal RPM band, increasing fuel consumption, penalizing maximum speed, and accelerating wear on the gears and lower gearbox shaft. The hub incorporates a friction bushing that acts as a mechanical fuse against impacts, protecting the transmission from more serious damage.

When to Replace This Part?

The clearest indicators that the propeller needs replacement are vibrations at the stern during navigation, noticeable loss of top speed or thrust when accelerating, and excessive cavitation visible as bubble turbulence in the wake. Any impact with a submerged object—even if it seems minor—can bend or dent a blade and unbalance the assembly, generating asymmetric loads that damage the seals and bearings of the lower gearbox. Visual inspection of the blades is recommended at the beginning of each season and after any impact; preventive replacement at the slightest structural damage avoids secondary transmission failures that are significantly more costly.
