The impeller is the heart of the water cooling system on Yamaha and Mercury Marine outboard motors. Its function is to pump water from the external inlet to the internal galleries of the engine, maintaining a constant circulation that dissipates the heat generated during combustion. The rubber blades create a rotating pumping action that ensures coolant flow when sailing in salt, brackish or fresh water. Without an impeller in optimal condition, the engine cannot regulate its operating temperature, which causes progressive overheating, accelerated corrosion of internal components and mechanical failures that compromise both performance and navigation safety.

When to replace this part?

A worn impeller presents unmistakable symptoms: loss of efficiency in water pumping, air entry into the cooling circuit, abnormal rise in engine temperature on the instrument panel and audible cavitation during operation. It is recommended to check the condition of the impeller every 300 to 400 hours of operation, or at least once a year before starting the boating season, since the rubber blades progressively erode due to contact with abrasive particles in the water. Preventive replacement of this component prevents high-cost repairs in emergency situations at sea and ensures that the cooling system operates at peak performance throughout the season.
