Marine silencers and exhaust: wet and dry

A marine engine's exhaust system has two jobs: to carry away the combustion gases and to keep water out of the engine. A badly sized exhaust, or one with the wrong silencer, does more than make noise: it can cause back pressure, power loss and, in the worst case, water finding its way back through the manifold into the cylinders.

At Repuestos Marinos we stock marine silencers for the two setups you normally find on board: wet exhaust, where the cooling water mixes with the gases and cools them, and dry exhaust, where the gases leave hot through an insulated duct.

Wet exhaust versus dry exhaust

Wet exhaust. This is the most widespread system on leisure boats. The raw water that has cooled the engine is injected into the exhaust elbow and travels mixed with the gases to the transom outlet. Advantages: quiet, compact and no hot surfaces in the engine room. It calls for a waterlock or separator silencer, a run with a siphon (swan neck) and an outlet above the waterline to prevent water backing up into the engine when the boat is stopped or running astern.

Dry exhaust. The gases leave without mixing with water, through an insulated duct up to a stack. It is the usual setup on fishing boats, workboats and some motorsailers. Advantage: no risk of water entering the engine. Downside: far noisier, with surfaces at very high temperatures that demand careful lagging and clearance from anything combustible. Dry exhaust silencers are made of stainless steel and work at temperatures of several hundred degrees.

Silencers, waterlocks and gas/water separators

Waterlock or water-lift silencer. This is a chamber that holds the exhaust water and stops it flowing back towards the engine when it shuts down. It must be mounted below the exhaust manifold and sized for the volume of water that can run back. It is the part that prevents the most expensive and most common wet exhaust failure of all: water in the cylinders.

Gas/water separators. Fitted at the end of the run, close to the topsides outlet. They separate the water from the gases so that the water exits through one thru-hull and the gases through another, cutting noise and spray at the stern considerably. Well worth having on boats where the exhaust outlet sits close to the cockpit or a bathing platform.

Exhaust connectors and ducting. Exhaust hose reinforced with textile or wire cord, elbows, adaptors and connectors in a range of diameters, plus AISI 316 stainless steel hose clamps. The most common diameters run from 40 to 152 mm.

How to size and install the exhaust

Diameter. Never reduce the diameter specified by the engine manufacturer. Every reduction increases back pressure, and with it fuel consumption, exhaust gas temperature and wear on the valves and turbo.

Fall. The exhaust run must fall continuously from the elbow to the outlet, with a minimum drop of 15° over the first section. Any upward section without a siphon is a potential route for water to back up.

Siphon or swan neck. Compulsory whenever the exhaust elbow sits below or very close to the waterline. At its highest point it must rise at least 30 cm above the waterline.

Supports. Secure the silencer and the hose runs every 50-60 cm. A waterlock full of water weighs several kilos, and the boat's motion will eventually tear the hose if it is not properly supported.

Servicing, warranty and 24-48 h delivery

Every season, check the condition of the exhaust hose (cracks, blistering, softening from heat), the tightness of the clamps and that there is no sediment in the waterlock. An aged exhaust hose lets go without warning and fills the engine room with exhaust gas and hot water. Replace it on age every 8-10 years even if it looks sound.

Delivery in 24-48 h to mainland Spain and the Balearics, 3-5 days to the Canary Islands and the rest of the EU. Orders placed before 14:00 ship the same day. Returns within 14 calendar days, plus technical advice by phone and WhatsApp for questions about fitment or parts diagrams.

Frequently asked questions about marine silencers and exhaust

What is the difference between a wet and a dry exhaust on a boat?

On a wet exhaust the cooling water is injected into the elbow and travels mixed with the gases to the transom outlet: it is quiet, compact and has no hot surfaces, but it needs a waterlock and a siphon to stop water backing up into the engine. On a dry exhaust the gases leave without water through an insulated duct up to a stack: there is no risk of water ingress, but it is far noisier and demands careful lagging because of the high temperatures.

What does a waterlock do?

A waterlock, or water-lift silencer, is a chamber that holds the exhaust water and stops it flowing back towards the engine when it shuts down. It is mounted below the exhaust manifold. It is the part that prevents the most expensive wet exhaust failure of all: water getting into the cylinders.

What is an exhaust gas/water separator?

It is a device fitted at the end of the exhaust run that separates the water from the gases, so the water exits through one thru-hull and the gases through another. It cuts noise and spray at the stern considerably, and is particularly worth fitting when the exhaust outlet sits close to the cockpit or the bathing platform.

Can I reduce the exhaust diameter so it fits better?

No. Reducing the diameter specified by the engine manufacturer increases back pressure, and with it fuel consumption, exhaust gas temperature and wear on the valves and turbo. If space is tight, the answer is to change the routing or use tight-radius elbows, never to choke down the bore.

How often should the exhaust hose be replaced?

On age, every 8 to 10 years, even if it looks fine from the outside. Check it every season for cracks, blistering or softening from heat, and check that the clamps are tight. An aged hose lets go without warning and fills the engine room with exhaust gas and hot water.

What fall should the exhaust run have?

It must fall continuously from the exhaust elbow to the outlet, with a minimum drop of 15° over the first section. If the elbow sits below or very close to the waterline, a siphon or swan neck rising at least 30 cm above the waterline is compulsory.
