Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial element in the anti-corrosion system of the outboard motor, protecting it from galvanic corrosion caused by immersion in salt, brackish or fresh water. Being a more reactive metal than aluminum and steel, zinc corrodes preferentially, preserving the critical metal parts of the motor unit – casing, leg and submerged components – against electrochemical attack. Without an anode in correct condition, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly damage the leg, tail shaft and other aluminum parts of the engine, leading to high-cost structural failures.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has reached its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost between 50% and 70% of its initial volume, it must be replaced without delay, as it no longer effectively protects the engine. It is recommended to inspect the anode at least once a season – or every 100 hours of navigation – and replace it preventively before each prolonged mooring period, especially in areas of high salinity. Don't wait for it to disappear completely: a motor without active cathodic protection can suffer severe damage in a few weeks of mooring.
