SUZUKI ZINC ANODE 55125-94502
Description
Function and technical context
This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial electrode in the outboard's cathodic protection system, drawing galvanic corrosion to itself to preserve the engine's structural metal parts—such as the housing, shaft, and tail components—from electrochemical deterioration caused by salt, brackish, or mineral-infused water. By oxidizing in a controlled manner, the anode gradually consumes its mass instead of allowing the corrosive process to attack components of greater value and complexity. Its correct condition is essential in outboard motors that operate in marine environments, since insufficient protection can lead to irreversible damage to the transmission and the lower casing in a relatively short time.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it has reached the limit of its useful life and no longer offers sufficient protection. The review should be carried out at the beginning of each season and, in areas of high salinity or intensive use, also in the middle of the campaign. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid serious repairs to the engine tail, which can greatly multiply the cost of a simple sacrificial part.
