The stern drive collar is a sealing and fastening element that acts in the joint area between the engine block and the external transmission or stern drive, guaranteeing the tightness of the assembly and the correct alignment of the rotating components. It works within the propulsion transmission system, specifically in the area where the drive shaft passes through the transom or drive housing. Its function is to prevent the entry of seawater or fresh water into the system and maintain the position of the dynamic elements under vibration and loading conditions. If this collar deteriorates or loses its structural integrity, water ingress may occur in critical areas, abnormal vibrations in the transmission and, in the most serious cases, irreparable damage to the axle housing or the internal bearings of the stern drive.

The most common symptoms of wear on a stern drive collar include the appearance of moisture or traces of water in the engine compartment, noticeable rubbing or vibration noises at cruising speed, and excessive play detectable when manually manipulating the transmission shaft. It is recommended that this component be inspected at each annual seasonal maintenance, as continuous exposure to salt water, thermal cycles and mechanical loads accelerate its degradation. Replacing the collar preventively before a leak occurs prevents major transmission breakdowns and possible emergency interventions in navigation.
