Description

Function and technical context

This 71°C thermostat regulates the temperature of the fresh water cooling circuit on Yanmar 6LY and 6CXL series marine diesel engines. Located in the fresh cooling water pump (section 23 of the exploded view, position 14), the thermostat controls the passage of the coolant to the heat exchanger: it remains closed until the opening temperature is reached and opens progressively to dissipate excess heat. A defective thermostat directly compromises the thermal balance of the engine, and can cause both overheating—with the risk of damage to the cylinder head and gaskets—and excessively cold operation that increases internal wear and fuel consumption.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a faulty thermostat are unstable engine temperature or outside the normal range on the instrument panel, excessively slow heating up to working temperature or, in the opposite case, frequent firing of the overtemperature warning light. In intensive use marine engines, it is recommended to check the thermostat during each seasonal maintenance and replace it preventively every two or three seasons, since the pressure of the fresh water circuit and repeated thermal changes degrade the wax element over time. Replacing it before it fails avoids unplanned stops in navigation and protects high-cost components such as the cylinder head or oil coolers.
