Function and technical context

This trim anode for Yanmar engines is part of the galvanic protection system of the boat's trim and steering unit. Its mission is to act as a sacrificial metal, absorbing the electrolytic corrosion that occurs when the marine engine is in contact with salt or brackish water, thus protecting the metal components of the trim mechanism against oxidation and electrochemical degradation. If this anode is depleted without being replaced in time, the structural and moving parts of the trim system are exposed to corrosion, which can lead to serious breakdowns, loss of trim functionality and costly repairs to the hydraulic unit or engine body.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of an exhausted anode are the appearance of visible corrosion on the metal surfaces of the trim, pitting in the housing or wear greater than 50% of the mass of the anode itself. It is recommended to check the condition of the anodes at the beginning of each sailing season and replace them when they have lost approximately half of their volume, without waiting for them to disappear completely. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the simplest and most economical measure to avoid irreversible structural damage in areas that are difficult to access and costly to repair.
