ANODE FOR YANMAR
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are essential cathodic protection elements in any marine outboard or inboard engine: their mission is to concentrate on themselves the galvanic corrosion process that would otherwise attack critical metal parts of the Yanmar engine such as the casing, shaft or transmission foot. Being made of a more electrochemically active metal, the anode corrodes in a controlled and sacrificial manner, leaving the structural surfaces of the propulsion intact. In Yanmar engines, the correct installation of this anode (ref. TEN01308) is key to preserving the integrity of the alloy components that work in contact with salt, brackish water or water with high electrical conductivity.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode is exhausted is visible pitting or corrosion on adjacent metal parts of the engine or transmission, a sign that the anode no longer offers effective protection. The recommended practice for marine mechanics is to inspect the anodes at least once a season and replace them when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, without waiting for them to disappear completely. Changing the anode preventively at the beginning of each nautical season is the simplest and most economical measure to avoid costly damage to components that are difficult to access or replace.
