Description

Function and technical context

The anode plug for Yanmar engines is a sacrificial component integrated into the seawater cooling circuit, whose mission is to protect the internal metal parts of the engine against galvanic corrosion. Made of zinc or anodic aluminum alloy, it acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic pair, absorbing electrochemical oxidation that would otherwise attack exhaust manifolds, cylinder liners, heat exchangers and other structural elements of the engine. Being housed in the form of a threaded cap, it allows direct access and simple replacement without the need to dismantle large assemblies, being especially relevant in installations that navigate in salt or brackish water. Its correct state of conservation is the first line of defense against irreversible damage to the block and cooling system of the Yanmar engine.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom of exhaustion of a plug anode is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is compromised. It is recommended to inspect and replace this anode plug at least once per nautical season or every 200-300 hours of operation in salt water, always anticipating winter stranding to prevent the engine from being left unprotected for months. Replacing the anode plug preventively is the most economical maintenance measure available to avoid corrosion pitting on high-cost components within the Yanmar cooling circuit.
