Description

Function and technical context

The 1/2" thread anode cap acts as a sacrificial cathodic protection element integrated into the internal galleries of the fresh water cooling circuit of Yanmar marine engines. Being made of anode material, it attracts galvanic corrosion to itself, preserving the engine block, cylinder liners and internal cooling ducts against electrochemical attack caused by contact between dissimilar metals in the presence of salt or brackish water. Its 1/2" thread guarantees Hermetic closure of the access port to the cooling circuit, avoiding refrigerant leaks and pressure losses in the cooling system. Without this component in proper condition, the internal galleries are exposed to accelerated oxidation, which can lead to blockages in the water circuit, engine overheating or perforations in the block due to advanced corrosion.

When to replace this part?

Plug anodes should be inspected at least once per nautical season and replaced when the anode material has lost more than 50% of its volume due to electrochemical wear, indicating that it has fulfilled its sacrificial function and no longer offers sufficient protection. On vessels operating in waters with high salinity or high stray electrical currents, wear can accelerate and require inspection every six months. Preventatively replacing the anode plug at each grounding or seasonal maintenance is the best practice to avoid costly structural damage to the engine block and prolong the life of the cooling system.
