Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode 811487 acts as a cathodic protection element within the internal cooling system of marine engines, interposing its metallic mass between the electrolyte (sea or fresh water) and the noble components of the engine. As it has a lower electrochemical potential than the metals it protects, it oxidizes in a controlled and preferential manner, preserving casings, heat exchangers, pipes and other internal metal parts against galvanic corrosion. Without adequate cathodic protection, degradation progresses silently until it compromises the tightness of the coolant circuit and causes serious damage to the engine block or water-cooled exhaust manifolds. Its installation is especially critical in installations with continuous use in aggressive marine environments, both in salt water and in freshwater estuaries.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, regardless of the time elapsed, since a depleted anode leaves the internal circuits unprotected against galvanic attack. In engines with intensive use or in areas with particularly conductive water (high salinity or high concentration of minerals), consumption may be faster and require intermediate revisions. Replacing the anode preventively at each seasonal inspection is the most economical measure to avoid perforation of exchangers, blockage of ducts due to rust and high-cost repairs on vessels out of port.
