Function and technical context

The zinc anodes act as cathodic protection of the engine block or powerhead, sacrificing themselves electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion in the metal parts of the outboard or semi-hydrojet engine. This kit groups all the anodes necessary to protect the powerhead assembly, covering the points of greatest exposure to corrosion in salt or brackish water environments. Without adequate anodic protection, the aluminum and alloy components of the engine block are attacked by electrolytic corrosion, which can lead to serious structural damage, pitting in the casing and accelerated deterioration that compromises the integrity of the powertrain. Replacing the entire kit ensures that no point is left unprotected throughout the entire sailing season.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at the beginning of each season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold their protective capacity decreases significantly. The symptoms of exhausted anodes are evident: pitting or erosion on the powerhead housing, whitish or orange discoloration in the areas where dissimilar metals join together, and, in advanced cases, active corrosion visible on the block. As a preventive rule, it is recommended to renew the complete kit annually – or every two seasons in fresh water – to guarantee continuous protection and avoid costly engine block repairs in the middle of the season.
