The forward sprocket is a fundamental gear in the transmission of outboard motors, responsible for transferring power from the crankshaft to the propeller shaft in the forward direction of travel. This component works integrated within the submerged gearbox, coordinating its rotation with other gears to ensure that the propeller rotates in the correct direction and with the appropriate reduction speed. A deteriorated or fractured pinion causes progressive loss of thrust, internal vibration in the transmission, difficulty maintaining cruising speeds and significantly compromises the maneuverability and operational safety of the vessel.

Typical symptoms of pinion deterioration include difficulty shifting gears when shifting into forward gear, clunking or grinding noises emanating from the gearbox, slipping under acceleration load, and abnormal vibrations while cruising. Although the replacement interval varies depending on the intensity of use and navigation conditions, it is advisable to inspect the condition of the pinion every navigation season and intervene preventively if fractures in the teeth, superficial wear or signs of corrosion are detected. Changing the pinion preventively avoids the risk of total breakage at sea and extends the useful life of the entire transmission.
