Function and technical context
The axle bushing is a support and alignment component that reduces friction between the drive shaft and engine structures, allowing for smooth, controlled rotation. It is part of the power transmission system, ensuring that the shaft rotates concentrically without deviations that could cause vibrations or secondary damage. Its correct condition is essential to maintain propulsion efficiency and prevent premature wear of adjacent bearings and seals, avoiding water leaks and lubrication losses in the gear chamber.
When to replace this part?
The bushing should be replaced when excessive shaft play (lateral movement detectable by hand), abnormal friction noises while driving, or visible material wear with color change or loss of surface is observed. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the bushing at each seasonal maintenance, especially after saltwater operations or prolonged runs at high rpm. Preventive replacement is advisable if the bushing shows signs of erosion even though the shaft is still functional, as progressive deterioration can compromise the alignment of the drive system and lead to more expensive repairs.
