Description
Function and technical context
The oil filter is an essential component of the lubrication system that retains metallic particles, carbon deposits and contaminants suspended in the engine oil. Its job is to maintain the viscosity and protective properties of the lubricant, preventing abrasive materials from damaging the internal surfaces of cylinders, pistons, bearings and gears. Without a filter in good condition, contaminants accelerate the premature wear of moving parts, reduce the useful life of the engine and can cause seizure or total breakdown while navigating.
When to replace this part?
The filter should be checked during each seasonal maintenance or according to the operating hours recommended by the manufacturer, usually every 100 to 200 hours of navigation. Symptoms of saturation include a drop in oil pressure, increased lubricant consumption or the presence of sediment in the used oil after draining. Preventive replacement is the safest practice: a new filter costs a fraction of the price of repairing an engine damaged by poor lubrication, and ensures reliability on long voyages.
