Function and technical context

The valve seal is an essential component of the engine sealing system that seals the interface between the valve stem and its housing in the cylinder head. Its main function is to prevent the crankcase oil from entering the combustion chamber through the valve passage, maintaining the compression pressure and preserving the integrity of the exhaust gases. This seal works under conditions of variable temperature and pressure, subject to constant friction of the stem during the opening and closing cycles of the valve. A failure in the seal causes internal oil leaks, increased lubricant consumption, entry of burned gases into the crankcase and, consequently, accelerated degradation of the engine oil and progressive loss of propulsion power.

When to replace this part?

Valve seal wear is typically manifested by blue smoke in the exhaust, especially during acceleration, visible increased oil consumption without visible external leaks, difficult cold starting, and presence of carbon deposits in the combustion chamber. Although these seals do not have a fixed maintenance interval established by hours of operation, inspection during each seasonal inspection is advisable, especially if the engine has been idle for a long time or has suffered extreme temperature variations. Replacing the seal preventively during a scheduled cylinder head inspection avoids costly later repairs and ensures optimal operation of the lubrication system.
