Function and technical context

The lower crankshaft seal is a critical component in the sealing system of the Yamaha marine engine. Positioned at the bottom of the crankshaft, it acts as a hermetic barrier to prevent lubricating oil from escaping from the crankcase to the outside, while simultaneously preventing salt water or other contaminants from entering the internal cavities of the engine. Its correct operation is essential to maintain effective lubrication of the bearings, camshaft and power transmission mechanisms. Any deterioration in this seal can cause severe oil leaks, reduction of the lubricating film and, consequently, catastrophic damage to the internal components of the engine.

The crankshaft seals show progressive wear during normal engine operation, especially after years of exposure to the salinity and vibrations characteristic of the marine environment. Typical symptoms include visible oil leaks around the base of the engine, a burning smell during operation, or a progressive decrease in oil level without apparent cause. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the seal during each annual seasonal maintenance check and, if signs of leakage are observed, proceed with its preventive replacement before the failure can affect bearings or gears. Replacing this component preventively is infinitely more economical than repairing secondary damage caused by lack of lubrication inside the engine.
