PISTON RINGS STD YAMAHA 64D-11603-01
Description
Function and technical context
Piston rings are essential components of the internal combustion system of Yamaha marine engines. These metal rings are installed in the piston grooves and perform three critical functions: they seal the combustion chamber to prevent high-pressure gases from leaking into the crankcase, they control the distribution of lubricant on the cylinder walls, and they facilitate heat transfer from the piston to the cylinder walls. Poor sealing causes loss of compression, drastic reduction in power, excessive fuel consumption and, in severe cases, water entering the crankcase with the risk of catastrophic engine damage.
When to replace this part?
Piston rings wear progressively by friction against the cylinder walls over thousands of operating cycles. Typical symptoms include loss of compression, bluish smoke in the exhaust (oil consumption indicator), difficulty when starting cold and a noticeable decrease in maximum revolutions. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the rings during each major maintenance check or every 500-800 hours of operation, depending on the intensive use of the boat. Preventive replacement during scheduled inspections prevents unexpected breakdowns in navigation and prolongs the life of the cylinder and piston.
