The pump base gasket acts as a sealing element between the body of the water pump and its housing in the engine block, guaranteeing the sealing of the seawater cooling circuit. It is part of the outboard engine's cooling system, where any leak—no matter how small—can compromise the flow of water that cools the internal passages and the heat exchanger. A deterioration of this gasket causes pressure losses in the circuit, a reduction in coolant flow and, ultimately, overheating of the engine with the consequent risk of severe damage to the cylinder head and pistons. Its correct installation is essential every time you intervene on the water pump or the lower exhaust manifold of the outboard.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs that this gasket has lost its sealing capacity are the presence of moisture or salt crusts on the base of the pump, the temperature warning beeping or the overheating indicator on, and an irregular or absent jet of cooling water from the water pilot. It is recommended to replace the gasket whenever the water pump is disassembled, an operation that in engines with intensive use usually coincides with checking the impeller every 300-400 hours or once a season. Taking advantage of the disassembly to renew this joint preventively avoids having to repeat the intervention and eliminates the risk of failure due to overheating outside the port.
