Description

Function and technical context

This seawater pump is part of the seawater cooling circuit in Yanmar JH series inboard diesel engines. Its mission is to push the water captured from the outside through the heat exchanger or engine block, evacuating the heat generated during combustion and maintaining the working temperature within safe operating ranges. It is a critical piece within the open circuit cooling system: if the pump loses flow or stops working correctly, the engine can quickly reach excessive temperatures, causing severe damage to head gaskets, liners or even the cylinder head itself. It corresponds to callout 6 of section 25 of the official Yanmar breakdown (Cooling Pump - Front Mounting Specification), with one unit per engine.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of failure in a seawater pump are a sudden rise in engine temperature, absence or notable reduction of the jet of cooling water through the exhaust, unusual noises in the pump area or visible water leaks in the casing. The internal impeller and mechanical seals of this type of pump are recommended to be checked every nautical season or approximately every 300-400 hours of operation, since continuous work with salt water accelerates the wear of the internal components. Replacing the pump preventively at the first signs of deterioration is the best way to avoid an emergency stop while sailing and the costly secondary damage that can be caused by engine overheating.
