Description
Function and technical context
The turbocharger is the central element of the engine's supercharging system: it compresses the intake air to increase the density of the fuel mixture, increasing the power and thermal efficiency of the propellant. In Volvo Penta's TWD710 and TID71A series industrial and marine diesel engines, the turbo works closely with the intake and exhaust system, taking advantage of the energy of the combustion gases to move the turbine and, with it, the compressor. A turbo in poor condition causes significant loss of power, excessive fuel consumption, black or blue smoke in the exhaust and, in severe cases, damage to the engine block due to poor lubrication or oil entering the intake. Replacement with a quality unit ensures the engine returns to factory performance and operates within the manufacturer's design parameters.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a damaged turbocharger include a noticeable loss of torque and power, excessive smoke from the exhaust pipe (blue if there is an oil leak, black if there are boosting problems), a high-pitched whistling noise or metallic rubbing in the turbo area, and the presence of oil in the intake manifold or intercooler. In heavy-duty marine engines such as the TWD710 series, it is recommended to inspect the turbo at each seasonal service or, at most, every 1,000 hours of service, checking the axial and radial play of the shaft, the condition of the seals and the cleanliness of the oil passages. Acting preventively at the first symptoms prevents a worn turbo from leading to more costly breakdowns, such as cylinder scoring or camshaft bearing failure.
