Function and technical context

The turbocharger is part of the engine's supercharging system, compressing the intake air to increase the amount of oxygen available in the combustion chamber and thus increase the power and performance of the marine propellant. It works in extreme conditions of temperature and rotation speed, constantly subjected to the exhaust gases that drive its turbine. A deteriorated turbo causes a noticeable loss of thrust, increased fuel consumption, excessive smoke emission and, in serious cases, engine damage due to poor combustion or oil entering the intake system. When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a bad turbocharger include progressive loss of power, bluish or black smoke from the exhaust, abnormal metallic noise coming from the turbo (high-pitched whistling or rattling), high oil consumption without a visible leak, and slow engine response when accelerating. It is recommended to inspect the turbo at each seasonal inspection and replace it if any of these signs occur, without waiting for a total failure, since a blocked or leaking turbo can cause severe damage to the engine block and result in high-cost repairs.
