Function and technical context

The 836-0001 hp impeller is the rotating element at the heart of the seawater pump, responsible for drawing in and pushing cooling water through the engine cooling circuit. Made of flexible elastomer, its vanes generate the flow necessary to maintain the working temperature within safe ranges in high-displacement marine engines. A degraded or broken impeller interrupts the water supply to the heat exchanger, causing overheating, damaged head gaskets and, in extreme cases, serious damage to the engine block. Its correct conservation is, therefore, a critical factor for the reliability and longevity of the propeller.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs of a bad impeller are an abnormal increase in engine temperature, the absence or reduction of the cooling water jet from the exhaust and, upon visual inspection, cracked, hardened or broken vanes. The general recommendation in intensive use engines is to replace the impeller every 300-400 hours of navigation or, at least, once a season in moderate use boats. Changing the impeller preventively, without waiting for the first symptoms of failure, is the simplest and most economical measure to avoid a technical stoppage at sea or costly damage to the cooling system.
