Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is the component responsible for protecting the submerged metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that progressively destroys the noble metals of the propulsion assembly when they are in contact with water. Being manufactured with an alloy with a lower electrochemical potential, the anode preferentially corrodes, acting as a sacrificial shield for the casing, the propeller shaft and other elements of the transmission and the engine foot. Without cathodic protection in good condition, the engine's structural components are exposed to accelerated degradation that can compromise the mechanical integrity of the engine and lead to serious breakdowns or the complete replacement of high-cost parts.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they are worn by more than 50% of their mass, when visible cracks appear or when the surface shows intense whitish corrosion indicating that it no longer offers effective protection. In boats that sail in salty or brackish waters, where galvanic corrosion is especially aggressive, it is common for replacement to be necessary once a season or even more frequently depending on the hours of use. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical and effective maintenance measure to avoid irreversible damage to the engine and transmission.
