ANODE VETUS KGF25
Description
Function and technical context
The Vetus KGF25 sacrificial anode acts as a cathodic protector of the boat, consuming in a controlled manner to prevent galvanic corrosion from attacking the submerged metal parts of the hull, tail shaft, propeller or hardware. It works within the boat's electrochemical protection system, where dissimilar metals in contact with salt or brackish water generate galvanic currents that, without protection, degrade high-cost components. The periodic replacement of this anode is the first line of defense against marine corrosion: if the anode is completely used up, corrosion directly attacks the noble metals of the boat, potentially rendering shafts, propellers or hulls unusable in a single sailing season.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the KGF25 anode needs replacement is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its visible mass: at that point, it no longer offers sufficient protection and should be replaced before taking the boat out on the water at the start of each season. In environments with high salinity or where the boat remains moored for months, it is advisable to check it mid-season, as wear can be significantly faster. Replacing the anode preventively, following an annual beaching schedule, avoids costly repairs to shafts and propellers that can multiply by ten the cost of a simple anode replacement.
