This 50 mm hexagonal anode from Vetus acts as a cathodic protection element on boats, sacrificing itself electrochemically to protect submerged metal surfaces – shafts, propellers, hulls and accessories – against galvanic corrosion. Its hexagonal design facilitates a firm and precise assembly, being common in installations of propulsion systems and nautical accessories of the Vetus brand where a localized protection point is required. Without active cathodic protection and in good condition, the noble metals of the boat are exposed to the corrosive action of salt or brackish water, which can lead to irreversible damage to high-cost parts such as tail shafts, propellers or metal keels. Maintaining the anode in optimal condition is, therefore, an essential preventative maintenance measure to preserve the long-term structural and mechanical integrity of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be replaced when they have lost approximately half of their mass, since below that threshold their cathodic protection capacity is compromised. The recommended check is at least once per nautical season, ideally at the annual beaching, although in waters with high conductivity or high salinity it may be necessary to check it more frequently.
