Function and technical context

Rectangular sacrificial anodes act as cathodic protection in boats and marine engines, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the noblest metal parts of the assembly—propellers, shafts, aluminum or steel casings. This anode, made of zinc, is installed directly on surfaces exposed to salt, brackish or fresh water, functioning as a sacrificial element: it wears out so that the metal structure of the boat does not. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can deteriorate critical transmission, hull or engine components in a single season, resulting in very expensive repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the rectangular anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its volume through erosion—at which point it no longer offers effective protection. As a general rule, zinc anodes are inspected and renewed every nautical season or every time the boat is taken out of dry dock, regardless of its external appearance. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each campaign is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to much higher value parts.
