ANODE FLAPS BOSTON WHALER
Description
Function and technical context
Boston Whaler flap anodes are cathodic protection elements designed specifically for the flaps or stern interceptors of these vessels. Its function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to protect the metal surfaces of the flaps against galvanic corrosion, one of the main enemies of components submerged in salt or brackish water. Being made of a zinc, aluminum or magnesium alloy depending on the navigation environment, they act as a negative pole in the galvanic couple, absorbing corrosion and preserving the structural integrity of the stern trim mechanisms. An exhausted or missing anode leaves the flaps unprotected, accelerating their deterioration and compromising both the hydrodynamic performance of the boat and the useful life of components with high replacement costs.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the flap anode needs replacement is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it should be replaced without delay. In grounding inspections it is common to find completely consumed or detached anodes, which indicates that the flaps have been sailing without protection for an indeterminate period. Preventive inspection and replacement is recommended in each navigation season or in each annual stranding; Delaying this low-cost maintenance can lead to corrosion of the flaps and their hardware, with significantly more expensive repairs.
