Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the central element of the galvanic protection system on boats, acting as an electrochemical shield between the metal of the boat and salt or brackish water. This 64×64×10 mm square anode is installed directly on hulls, buttresses, rudders or submerged metal structures, offering a uniform contact surface that maximizes the efficiency of cathodic protection. Being a less noble metal than aluminum or stainless steel of the components it protects, it is it that corrodes in a controlled manner, preserving the structural integrity of propellers, shafts, keels and other submerged elements. Without adequate galvanic protection, electrolytic corrosion can irreversibly damage expensive components within a few weeks of sailing.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that a sacrificial anode must be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the anode appears visibly reduced, irregular or with completely consumed areas, it has exhausted its protective capacity. It is recommended that the anodes be inspected and replaced at least once per nautical season, or each time the boat leaves the water for docking or hull maintenance. Delaying changing anodes when they are worn is one of the most frequent and costly errors in nautical maintenance, as it exposes components whose repair more than multiplies the cost of a simple new anode to direct corrosion.
