Function and Technical Context

The throttle cable is the mechanical transmission element that connects the throttle control lever on the helm or console to the carburetor of the outboard engine, allowing the operator to precisely control fuel delivery and, therefore, the power and speed of the vessel. It operates within the remote control system of the engine, together with the shift cable, forming the control command assembly that governs the propeller from the helm station. In Johnson 8 HP engines of the corresponding series, a worn throttle cable causes irregular throttle response, loss of synchronization between the control lever position and carburetor opening, and can result in unstable idle or inability to reach full RPM. The OMC/Johnson reference 433325 guarantees exact dimensional and functional compatibility with the engine groups for which it was designed.

When to Replace This Part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or damaged throttle cable are: jerky acceleration or delayed response when moving the control lever, throttle that gets stuck or does not return smoothly to idle, and in advanced cases breakage of the cable's internal strands resulting in complete loss of throttle control. It is recommended to inspect the throttle cable at each seasonal maintenance interval, verifying that the travel is free, with no chafing or kinks in the sheath, and that the terminals show no corrosion or excessive play. Replacing the cable preventively at the first signs of stiffness or abnormal play prevents losing throttle control while underway, a hazardous situation that can lead to major damage to the carburetor or the control mechanism itself.
