Description
Function and Technical Context
The throttle cable mechanically transmits the movement of the gas control lever from the helm console to the carburetor or throttle butterfly of the outboard engine, precisely regulating the amount of air-fuel mixture and therefore the engine rpm. This component is part of the power and maneuvering control system, serving as the physical link between the skipper's command and the propulsion unit's response. A damaged cable causes irregular or no throttle response, resulting in loss of control over vessel speed, an obvious risk in both navigation and docking maneuvers. Reference 0435230 is specifically designed for OMC Johnson series engines of 10 and 15 HP, guaranteeing the correct geometry, length, and terminals for precise fit on these engine families.
When to Replace This Part?
The most common symptoms of a worn or damaged throttle cable are: slow or jerky response when operating the throttle, throttle that gets "stuck" in one position or does not return smoothly to idle, and erratic rpm variations without changes in control lever position. Internal corrosion of the cable housing, frequent in marine environments due to continuous exposure to salt and moisture, is the primary cause of premature deterioration; therefore it is advisable to check the cable condition at each seasonal maintenance and lubricate its interior if the design permits. Replacing the throttle cable preventively at the first signs of stiffness or excessive play avoids losing power control while underway, a situation that can lead to more costly breakdowns or dangerous situations on the water.
