Function and technical context

The trim sensor is part of the outboard trim and tilt control system, acting as a measuring element that informs the control unit and the trim indicator of the exact angle at which the drive unit is with respect to the transom. Integrated into the electrical circuit of the hydraulic trim and tilt system, this sensor captures the position of the engine through resistance variations and transmits the corresponding signal to the instrument panel, allowing the skipper to precisely adjust the thrust angle to optimize navigation efficiency, fuel consumption and the behavior of the boat in different sea conditions. A faulty or out-of-calibration sensor causes erroneous readings on the trim indicator, which can lead to incorrect thrust angle adjustments, loss of hydrodynamic performance and, in critical cases, difficulty controlling the boat's attitude.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a failed trim sensor are the trim indicator needle that does not move, oscillates erratically or marks a fixed position regardless of the actual engine angle, as well as the activation of warnings in the control unit or the inability to correctly calibrate the trim system. As it is an electronic component exposed to vibrations, humidity and saline environments, it should be inspected at each seasonal inspection and replaced if there is any sign of failure; Prolonging its use in poor condition can lead to poor trim management and secondary damage to the hydraulic or electronic control system.
