Description

Function and technical context

The propeller spacer is a component of the outboard transmission system that is housed between the propeller hub and the propulsion shaft, acting as a spacer and axial adjustment element. Its mission is to guarantee the correct positioning of the propeller with respect to the gearbox, ensuring that the thrust is transmitted optimally and that there is no play or undue friction in the rotating assembly. A damaged or non-existent separator can cause abnormal vibrations in the engine tail, premature wear of the shaft and hub, and even loss of the propeller while sailing. This element, although discreet, is essential to maintain the mechanical integrity of the propulsion train in Suzuki engines in the small and medium displacement range.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the propeller spacer needs to be replaced are: noticeable vibration or rattling in the propeller area while sailing, excessive axial play when moving the propeller by hand with the engine off, or visible signs of corrosion, deformation or breakage when removing the propeller for inspection. It is recommended to check this component during each seasonal maintenance or whenever the propeller is disassembled to clean hooks, tangled line or foreign objects. Replacing it preventively during regular maintenance is a low-cost measure that avoids transmission breakdowns that are much more costly to resolve on the high seas.
