Function and technical context

The reverse gear is part of the reverse gear assembly located in the outboard motor foot gearbox. Its function is to transmit the rotation of the drive shaft to the propeller in reverse when the operator selects reverse gear, allowing docking maneuvers and control of the boat. It works within the lower drive system of the outboard, meshing with the drive sprocket and forward sprocket to manage the direction of rotation of the propeller. If this component shows excessive wear, broken teeth or abnormal play, the engine may lose the ability to correctly select reverse gear, causing a lack of response in maneuvers or metallic noises in the foot. Its correct condition is essential for safety in port and coastal navigation.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged reverse gear include difficulty engaging reverse gear, slipping or loss of traction when selecting reverse gear, and rattling or grinding noises from the engine foot during maneuvers. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the transmission case sprockets at each seasonal service or when unusual vibration is detected in the gear selector. Replacing the pinion preventively at the first sign of wear prevents major breakdowns in the transmission assembly that can leave the boat inoperative at the most inopportune moment.
