For Suzuki outboard engines DF2.5, DF4, DF5, DF6, DT4, DT5 and DT9, among other low displacement models. The propeller pinion transmits shaft rotation to the propeller in the propulsion system. Its breakage—common after impact with submerged objects—leaves the boat without progress; It is advisable to carry a spare on board.

Description

Function and technical context

The propeller pinion is the transmission element that joins the propulsion shaft with the propeller in small displacement outboard engines, acting as a mechanical link in the propulsion system. Its main mission is to transmit the rotation of the shaft to the propeller in a joint manner, guaranteeing that the thrust generated by the engine is efficiently transferred to the water. When this component wears or fractures, the propeller loses its engagement with the shaft, resulting in a complete loss of propulsion even though the engine continues to operate normally. In low-power engines such as those in the Suzuki DF and DT range, keeping this small but critical element in perfect condition is essential for the safety and performance of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom of a damaged propeller pinion is that the engine starts and accelerates correctly but the boat does not advance or does so with a notable loss of traction, since the propeller rotates freely on the shaft without transferring force. This component can break suddenly when the propeller hits a submerged object, acting as a mechanical fuse that protects more expensive parts of the drive train. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the pin at each seasonal inspection and always carry a spare unit on board, since its breakage can leave the boat without propulsion at any time.
