Function and technical context

This zinc anode for Suzuki outboard motors is part of the cathodic protection system of the drive unit. Its function is to act as a sacrificial electrode: being a more electrochemically active metal than the aluminum or steel of the structural components of the engine, it preferentially corrodes, protecting the noble parts of the block, the water pump housing, the propulsion shaft and other submerged metal elements. Without proper cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly attack critical engine parts, causing costly damage to the tail, lower unit or propeller casing.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode needs to be replaced is the reduction in its mass by approximately 50%: when the anode has lost half of its volume, its protective capacity decreases significantly and it no longer guarantees protection of the motor. In salty or brackish waters, wear is significantly accelerated, so it is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at least once a season and always replace it before it is completely consumed. Changing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is common practice among nautical professionals, since its cost is minimal compared to a corrosion repair in the lower unit or engine casing.
