Description

Function and technical context

The crankshaft pin is the cylindrical pin that joins the connecting rod end to the crankshaft journal, transmitting the reciprocating movement of the piston to the rotary movement of the crankshaft within the engine block. It works at the heart of the internal combustion engine's force distribution system, supporting cyclic impact loads and elevated temperatures during each combustion cycle. Its structural integrity is decisive for the correct functioning of the connecting rod-crank assembly: a worn bolt generates play that results in internal knocking, loss of compression and, in extreme cases, irreparable damage to the block or connecting rod. This component is manufactured to meet the dimensional tolerances required by Suzuki for its DT series outboard motors, ensuring the precise fit required in engines operating in the demanding marine environment.

When to replace this part?

Crankshaft pin wear usually manifests itself as a dry metallic knocking or "tapping" inside the engine, especially noticeable at idle or when accelerating suddenly, sometimes accompanied by high oil consumption and loss of compression in the affected cylinder. It is recommended to inspect the bolt and its bushings at each in-depth engine inspection or when abnormal vibrations are detected in the crank train; For outboard motors with intensive use, this check should be carried out at least every two seasons. Replacing it preventively during opening of the block avoids higher cost breakdowns and the risk of becoming immobilized in the water.
