Description

Function and technical context

This disc-shaped stern anode, with a diameter of 160 mm and made of high-purity zinc, acts as cathodic protection of the propulsion system in saline and brackish environments. Its function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to protect the noble metal parts of the stern assembly—propeller, shaft, hub and transmission casing—against galvanic corrosion that occurs when different metals are submerged in seawater. By concentrating the oxidation on itself, it prevents corrosion from attacking high-cost components that are difficult to replace. Installation in the stern area, directly exposed to the flow of water, maximizes the efficiency of the protection and guarantees the structural integrity of the propulsion assembly throughout the entire navigation season.

When to replace this part?

The main indicator of exhaustion of a zinc anode is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed approximately 50% of its volume it must be replaced without delay, since below that threshold it stops offering effective protection. It is recommended to check the condition of the anode at each beaching or, at least, at the beginning and end of each navigation season; In areas with especially aggressive water or on vessels with eddy currents, the inspection frequency should be greater. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance intervention available: the cost of an anode is negligible compared to repairing a corroded shaft or replacing a propeller damaged by galvanic pitting.
