Description

Function and technical context

The stern anode is a cathodic protection element that works in the boat's anti-corrosion system, acting as a sacrificial metal to protect the submerged metal parts - tail shaft, propeller, stern support and outboard motor casing - against galvanic corrosion. Being made of a more electronegative material than the components it protects, this anode corrodes in a controlled and preferential manner, preserving the structural integrity of the noble parts of the propulsion assembly. With a diameter of 140 mm in its complete version (reference TEN00130C), it offers a protective surface suitable for stern installations where exposure to salt, brackish or electrolyzed water is continuous. Its absence or excessive deterioration leaves critical areas unprotected that can suffer severe and irreversible corrosion in a few navigation seasons.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the aft anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when it is visually reduced by half or with deep and irregular pits, it no longer offers effective protection. The standard recommendation in nautical mechanics is to inspect and replace the anodes at least once a season - or every 12 months in boats frequently used in salt water -, without waiting for them to be completely consumed. Changing the anode preventively at each grounding or annual tune-up is the most economical practice to avoid damage due to galvanic corrosion in propulsion components of much higher cost.
