STERN ANODE 140mm.
Description
Function and technical context
Stern anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of structural metal parts of the boat, such as the transom, propeller, shaft or eyebolt. This 140 mm anode acts as a sacrificial metal in the galvanic protection system of the stern, absorbing corrosion produced by the difference in electrical potential between different metals submerged in salt or fresh water. Without adequate cathodic protection, metal components in the stern are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the structural integrity of the hull and propulsion systems. Its correct installation and periodic replacement is essential to prolong the useful life of all the metal elements located in the stern area.
When to replace this part?
The clearest indicator that the aft anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 70% of its mass due to erosion: if it appears visibly reduced, cracked or with an irregular shape compared to its initial state, it has reached the limit of its useful life. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once per nautical season, and replace them preventively each season or sooner if the boat operates in waters with high conductivity or high salinity. Do not wait for the anode to be completely consumed: a stern without active cathodic protection can suffer severe and irreversible damage in a few weeks of navigation.
