Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the key element of cathodic protection on boats with outboard or inboard motors, acting as an electrochemical shield against galvanic corrosion that affects submerged metal components. This complete 135 mm Baglietto anode protects the most vulnerable parts of the propulsion system and hull as it is the material that corrodes first, preventing the electrolytic process from attacking more expensive parts such as axles, propellers, keels or metal blocks. Its function is especially critical in salt or brackish water environments, where electrolyte activity is considerably intensified. The correct installation and condition of the anode directly determine the useful life of the submerged metal assembly of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode has completed its cycle is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the anode appears visibly eroded, fragmented or reduced to less than half its initial volume, it should be replaced immediately. The general recommendation for sacrificial anodes is to check them at least once per nautical season and replace them preventively at each annual beaching, regardless of their apparent condition, since an exhausted anode leaves the noble metals of the propulsion assembly unprotected. Replacing the anode at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical preventive measure to avoid corrosion damage to high-cost structural parts.
