Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the components responsible for protecting the submerged metal parts of the boat against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that can destroy propellers, shafts, dimensions and hull structures if not managed correctly. This 120 mm Baglietto anode in full version acts as a sacrificial electrode: being a metal with lower electrochemical potential, it corrodes preferentially instead of the most valuable components of the propulsion assembly. Its mounting in the stern area or in the propulsion system guarantees that the galvanic current is diverted towards it, keeping the structural and mechanical elements of the axle or transmission intact throughout the navigation season. Without an anode in good condition, galvanic oxidation can compromise high-cost parts such as propellers or horns in a few weeks.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost 30-50% of its mass: at that point it no longer offers effective protection and adjacent metal components are exposed to corrosion. On boats that remain in the water continuously, it is recommended to inspect the anode at least once each season and replace it annually as a preventive measure, regardless of its visual condition, since galvanic activity is not always visible to the naked eye. Changing the anode before each beaching or at the beginning of the season is the most cost-effective practice to avoid costly structural damage to tails, shafts and propellers.
