Function and technical context

The starter motor is the electrical component responsible for rotating the crankshaft of the outboard engine at start-up, providing the torque necessary to start the combustion cycle. It works within the electric starting system, receiving current from the battery through the starter solenoid or relay and transmitting the rotational movement to the flywheel or engine ring gear. In high displacement two-stroke engines such as the Suzuki DT115 and DT140, a starter motor in poor condition can prevent the engine from starting, leave the boat inoperative or cause intermittent failures that compromise safety on board. When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged starter motor include a dry clicking sound without turning the engine, slow starting or with obvious effort, metallic squeaks during starting due to wear of the bendix pinion, or total lack of response when turning the ignition key despite having the battery in good condition. In outboard motors with intensive use or with many hours of navigation, it is recommended to check the condition of the starter during each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to the contacts, the pinion and the rotor collector.
