Description

Function and Technical Context

The propeller transforms engine torque into hydraulic thrust by transmitting power from the shaft to the water, propelling the vessel efficiently. This left-hand rotation unit—also called counter-rotating—is essential in dual-engine configurations or in installations where the shaft rotation direction requires a blade with pitch opposite to the conventional orientation; mounting a propeller with incorrect rotation causes complete loss of effective thrust and can generate destructive vibrations on the shaft and stuffing box. The nominal dimensions of 15.1 inches diameter and 20 inches pitch directly determine the operating regime of the propulsion unit and cruise speed, so respecting both values is critical to maintain RPM within the optimal engine range. A cavitated, bent, or worn-pitch blade increases fuel consumption, subjects the stuffing box bearing and shaft seal to abnormal stresses, and can render the vessel inoperative in open water.

When to Replace This Propeller?

The most common signs of a deteriorated propeller include abnormal vibrations when increasing RPM, loss of top speed with no apparent engine cause, inability to reach maximum design RPM—indicating pitch reduction from deformation—or overspeed at idle, which indicates loss of blade surface. It is recommended to visually inspect the propeller at the beginning and end of each season, paying special attention to cavitation marks, bent leading edges, and erosion on the hub; any impact with a solid object—seabed, mooring line, or net—requires removal and balance verification before continuing to navigate. Preventively replacing the propeller at the slightest structural damage prevents secondary failures in the stuffing box, shaft, and static seal, repairs that are considerably more expensive than propeller replacement.
