Function and Technical Context

The crankshaft and camshaft seals constitute the dynamic seal that prevents lubricating oil leakage toward the outside of the engine block and prevents water or contaminants from entering the interior. This kit groups all the seals necessary for a complete overhaul of the sealing system in two-stroke Johnson and Evinrude outboard engines of the 20 to 35 HP series manufactured from the mid-seventies to the late eighties. A deteriorated seal directly compromises the lubrication of internal components and can cause saltwater entry into critical areas, accelerating internal corrosion and premature wear of the crankshaft, bearings and power joints.

When to Replace This Component?

The most common symptoms of damaged seals in two-stroke outboards include oil stains in the engine block area or around the lower cover, water mixed in the gearbox oil, progressive loss of compression and unstable idle from internal pressure leaks. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the seals at each seasonal maintenance and replace them preventively whenever the lower cover is removed or work is performed on the crankshaft. Renewing the complete kit each time the engine is opened prevents serious breakdowns while underway and guarantees the watertightness of the sealed assembly.
